I have been lazy

Actually, October 2010 sounds much more recent than I thought my last post was. Well I've been feeling motivated lately and I feel like posting again. And maybe even fixing all those broken links since my home fileserver went down. Maybe even re-ripping a few of the requested reups

It's ON: Starting with my radio show last night

In case y'all didn't hear, my hometown won the NFC championship last night, launching us into an impromptu Mardi Gras. For a lot of us, we never thought a black & gold superbowl could or would happen.

So I've changed colors accordingly (perhaps a little gaudier than before) and I'm declaring a rivalry between this blog and Colt-loving Brandonio's RockIsDead RIP. Sure it's brought me a lot of hits and normally I'd say it's an excellent blog and probably the next one you should go to after this one, but I'm afraid we can't be friends*. I don't really know what this rivalry means, I'm pretty sure he gets way more hits than I do (deservedly so, he posts good stuff and way more often than I do), but I'll wield the one weapon I have: my hometown: New Orleans is unparalleled in its rock & roll, etc, history so until the Superbowl I'm going to try to stick in that mode.

So since this was some dumb idea I cooked up as I rolled out of bed today, I'll post something from my other little creative endeavor that I usually keep separate from this blog. I do a weekly surf & instrumental radio show on WTUL 91.5FM and yesterday I was doing that from 4PM-6PM, right through the 5:40 kickoff. I think it was one of my better shows and undoubtedly one of the ones where I was getting more worked up, so here ya go

Storm Surge of Reverb NFC Championship Edition (really big so you might wanna right click, save as)

*just as I declared this rivalry into existence, I will declare it immediately over after the Superbowl... WHEN WE WIN. But we can be friends again then

Learn to dance while I nurse my server back to health

Welp, looks like my hard drive crashed, so almost all the 45s will be down while I figure out what to do.

In the meantime, somebody on flickr posted some hints out how to do THE FRUG and all sorts of other dances. These never work as well as watching it being done, but this is the closest thing I've found

Domino Sound made some dumb magazine's list of best record stores

Normally I wouldn't go looking in GQ for the best record stores in the country, but I was super surprised and super delighted to see Domino Sound on their list. If you check out the record store link on the side bar, you'll see that I can hardly disagree, but I wouldn't expect one of ours, especially one so small, new and vinyl-only to make it on. Congratulations!

http://www.gq.com/entertainment/music/200902/gq-favorite-record-stores-slideshow#slide=20

It might be fun one day to make my own list like this because there's a of places that seem pretty worthy that I don't see mentioned much.

Speaking of things I should do, mostly situated in my new apartment, need to tweak my turntable and server situation but I've got a stack of vinyl ready to be ripped. This blog will live again

A little downtime

You may notice I'm missing my background and a lot of the singles links are down. I'm moving apartments and my little server is caught in the middle, not to mention I'm still trying to scramble this record fair together. When things are nice I'll have some gospel ready for ya

Blog's not dead

I've been a little on the lazy side for a few weeks. I thought that I would post some things during the downtime as I take a little roadtrip to Colorado and back, but it looks like my fileserver's down. Hopefully that'll be back up on Friday. I've got at least two cool posts planned and some ideas after that.

Whoops I didn't notice

This blog has existed for over a year! Since you're already disappointed that this post isn't really a download, I'll be quick: thanks to everybody that's ever dropped a comment, thanks to all the blogs that have linked back to me (Brandonio of Rock is Dead R.I.P. has been especially cool), thanks for all the kind words. This whole thing has been a very rewarding experience and has given me a lot of ideas, one of which might be something really big one day...

I didn't really think about what I wanted to do for this, so have an archive of my past surf shows (more thanks due to Steve)

Or maybe this playlist of songs on youtube I've been making when I see something cool

Another SSOR tomorrow... do you want to keep seeing these?

I post Storm Surge of Reverb updates on my myspace, surfguitar101.com, facebook and here. While it doesn't really hurt the site in the sense that it makes it oh so much more googleable, I feel bad when half of these are radio show posts. Do people enjoy seeing these playlists or should I stick with the real posts? By the way, I've got at least two more of those comin' up.

STORM SURGE TONIGHT + a few other things

That's right, another show of unapologetic instrumental rock & roll at 2AM CST, WTULNEWORLEANS.COM (as in Thursday morning)

but in the meantime, two things:

1) I actually just listened to a 45 I'm going to slip on here. Blog's not dead.

2) but my file hosting is. For some reason Wesleyan doesn't want to host their alumn's website crap forever. Unless somebody knows a good, free solution for hosting and easy streaming of single songs, there might be a little downtime for 45s while I figure out my own little server.

Slooooow postin'

There are a few reasons this blog is going slowly

a) I have a sorta jobish thing and will for about a month

b) I have a whoooole lot of music to listen to. You'd think this would mean MORE blog posting, but instead you get REALLY frustrated finding these hot singles, googling them and finding that they're either still in print or that somebody's beat you to the punch. Then you forget which ones HAVEN'T had that happen yet. And I'm unorganized. So I'm probably going to just plow through these things, get my collection back in order, THEN start getting these gears grinding again.

How much music you ask? I haven't listened to any of this

That's roughly 200 45s and 50 LPs. A lot of this isn't really within the scope of this blog (yes that is a 45 of TLC's Waterfalls). BUT I don't want to miss anything so I gotta listen to it ALL. And I'm still organizing the 45s from the last time I posted a bunch of records I got

c) MARDI GRAS

d) I've got BIG PLANS I've been working on, one sort of blog related one not at all.

REGARDLESS OUT OF SHEER GUILT I HAVE SOME THINGS I'LL PUT UP. It's really sad to watch your hits fizzle out when you're on top of your game, so I've probably got another Sandy Nelson coming and a couple of other little tricks.

Ripping 45s or Why This Blog Is Going To Be Pretty Good For A While

Brandonio over at Rock is Dead R.I.P. was urging me in a recent thread to post some more ripped 45s. While I was planning on doing some eventually, the great Craigslist god was listening and put up a post in Baton Rouge for ~200 45s "from the 50s and 60s". In the free section. So I hauled my butt over there yesterday and picked them up and, as I was warned, a lot are in pretty poor shape... but mostly cosmetically. In fact, most of these sound better than the haul I had on Saturday (which also yielded a few gems). I've only gone through about 40 or so, but from looking there's a ton of great rockabilly, a few instrumentals though not necessarily surf, and a bunch of other weird things that I might put up here for giggles. Going through, I've been keeping about 3/4 of them. Oddly enough, not many of these are big names at all, but I really don't think this is somebody's refuse pile, since a lot of these fetch double-digit prices online. And they're great. I don't really need to give you examples here, because we're going to listen to those examples for a pretty good while on this blog.

But I want to go back to Brandonio's comment for a second. I've tried doing youtube videos for 45s in the past and I'm probably not going to bother with that, but a lot of the 45s I have are out of print but available elsewhere on the internet. I don't want to steal another blog's thunder by reposting their stuff (I know, who am I kidding?), but Youtube videos might be a different story, since you can't save the music as easily, not to mention sound quality issues.

So what are your thoughts?
