This is a silly record. It has its slower moments such as Surf Dreams and St. James Infirmary, but the high points are undoubtedly goofy songs like "I Scream" (they are screaming for ice cream) and Hot Pastrami, not to mention other songs inspired by the culinary arts.
Who are they? The Dartells weren't exactly a sensation, though Hot Pastrami hit #11 on the pop charts back in the day... interesting when you consider the fact that it was essentially a cover of "Mashed Potatoes" (hey look! they even mention it straight off in the song!). They've been somewhat canonized into the surf craze, but it's not exactly written all over the record. There's a song called surf dreams, yeah, and there are some bare instrumentals on here, and Hot Pastrami was covered by, I believe, The Chantays, but that's about it.
I'll be honest though, while it has its fun parts, this Dartells album is a victim of pretty poor recording. It seems like there's a lot going on, but the sound is so subdued that it doesn't really get to the action that I think the band is really pumping out. This is a somewhat recognizable album that some of you may be familiar with, so you're welcome to disagree.

there is a reason for the poor recording. the Dartells then known as The Casuals were asked to come to Capital Records to be the backup band for one time game show host Wink Martindale who was recording a song called Black Land Farmer. They were asked to record some music of their own by way of payment for their services. the recordings were done in hast and all were one takes. The record company released Hot Pastomi without ever talking to the group about it. It was playing on the radio before it was known
Another notible fact is that the picture is not acurate. Corky and his sax parts were added after the release of the 45 Hot Pastomi. Its popularity encouraged the album and Corky added sax parts over Richards.He also added vocals to the original takes.

Galen Mills comments are questionable. One, The Dartells recorded for Dot Records, not Capital. Two, while it is true that Corky Wilke was not on the 45 Hot Pastrami or the b-side Dartell Stomp, he is all over the album. That's him doing most of the vocal parts, along with the late Doug Phillips. His parts were not added later, it's largely a sax driven album and his solo on Surf Dreams is the most beautiful sax solo ever laid down.
Moses, Dot Records was at that time a subsidiary of Capital Record.Corky parts are dubovers and a recut on saint james inf.

The Dartells initially recorded Hot Pastrami b/w Dartell Stomp the the small Los Angeles label Arlen. Dot Records picked up the single and distributed it nationally. At the time, Dot Records was owned by Paramount. I have found no information describing Dot being owned by Capital Records.
the statement about the Dartels original release being on Arlyn Records is correct,please excuse my 67 year old memory, it fails me at times. Yes Dot was a subsidary of Paramount.I had Capital on the brain cause I was working over there with some musicians at the time.Richard Peil can give you any facts you want. Dick was there from the beginning.I came along later.I stand by everything else in my original comment

As a member of the "new" Dartells in 2004-2007, just know that, original member Richard Burns, wanted to continue the legacy. So with Freddie Cannon and vocal help by Freddie, Donnie Brooks and Jewel Akens, we recorded the album, "Mo'Pastrami" and were in two KVEN "oldies" concerts in Oxnard, CA, in 2005 & 2006. In 2008, the album was completed, but Richard had a stroke and died 2 days after completion. The, 2 years in the making, album has never been released.
